ATA Hedland starts with promise
The newly-established Hedland Taekwondo Club recently received a special visit from world-renowned Taekwondo master Kim Seng. In addition to his own personal achievements, including a ranking of seventh Dan Black Belt, Mr Seng has been a referee at major international tournaments.
On August 22, Mr Seng travelled to Hedland to undertake a weekend seminar with senior club members at the JD Hardie Centre, teaching new techniques and ensuring club members were practising Taekwondo at an international standard. Mr Seng’s style was fun and fast-paced as students raised a sweat but were challenged to strive for excellence.
Despite being less than two months old, the club already has a membership of more than 25 students and has appointed fifth Dan Black Belt master John Geeves as head instructor.
On the final day of the seminar, students were graded by both Mr Seng and Mr Geeves. Students Tim Turner and Sean Van Hengel, aged 12, were both skilled enough to attain the rank of red belt. Mr Seng was impressed by the general standard of taekwondo and also double graded several students on the final day.
The club has planned a trip to Perth to attend competitions at the end of the year and is also investigating the possibility of visiting Indonesia as part of an international exchange program supported by Mr Seng.
The Hedland Taekwondo Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at the JD Hardie Centre between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. For more information, contact Brent Kara on 0429 795 692 or Tim Turner on 0427 995 291
