posted by Kim Seng in Photos, Port Hedland

Tore Bule-Turner of the ATA Hedland Taekwondo club won an award in the category of Participate! Commissioner for Children and Young People Award.  He received his award recently.

The community of South Hedland know Torekana as the “Billy Elliot of hip hop” and the “Jackie Chan of Taekwondo”.  Aside from these varying talents, he is respected as an exceptional young leader in his community.  Through his love for hip-hop and taekwondo he inspires ‘at-risk children’ to participate and get involved in the arts.

Not only is he head boy of his high school, he also volunteers his time to teach hip hop to his peers in the Pilbara area and is a leader of youth led project, ‘The Hood’, an innovative program that uses  dance to reach out to young people in the community. Torekana is a gifted artist and a role model for many young Indigenous boys in his community.

He has also been nick named MJ (Michael Jackson) as he is very proficient in emulating MJ's moves such as as the moonwalk.

Tim Turner, ATA Hedland Instructor received multiple prestigious awards from The WA Health Industry at its annual WA Health Conference and Awards night with his work with the Aboriginal people and community of Port Hedland.

WA Health Conference 2011WA Health Awards 2011

The WA Health Awards were established to recognise the innovative work being undertaken by WA Health employees in providing quality health care to the people of Western Australia.  The aim of these Awards is to promote and inspire best practice and continuous improvement, and to recognise those employees who tirelessly strive to better our public health services.  The WA Health Awards were presented at the closing dinner during the WA Health Conference on Wednesday 30th November.

The Awards honour outstanding employee contributions across WA Health and were presented in the following categories in 2011:

1.  Director General's Choice Award – Sponsored by HESTA

Winner:
Tim Turner, Indigenous Employment Program, WA Country Health Service – Pilbara.
Director General's Choice Award

The Indigenous Employment Program is an innovative five-year project to increase the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal staff across the Pilbara. The program is a partnership with Royalties for Regions program and the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s Pilbara Industry’s Community Council Health initiative members (BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy).

This commitment has witnessed more than 30 new starters in the past 12 months. This is a significant achievement as the Pilbara is one of the most competitive labour markets in Australia. The Program funds a flexible scholarship program which has resulted in 37% of Aboriginal staff undertaking tertiary studies and a staff development program that draws upon the cultural and contemporary strengths of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal leadership.

2. Excellence in Human Resources (Peter Baldwin Memorial Award) – Sponsored by Australian Institute of Management

Winner:

Tim Turner, Indigenous Employment Program, WA Country Health Service – Pilbara.
Excellence in Human Resources (Peter Baldwin Memorial Award)

Tim has played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the Indigenous Employment Program in the Pilbara. Tim has provided coaching and mentoring to Aboriginal staff, managers and senior executive members.

Tim has supported many staff to take up scholarships for further education and development within the team. He uses his interpersonal skills to build the confidence of others and is engaged in a number of community programs and is able to communicate across the generations from the very young to the elders in the community.

Tim’s contribution to increasing the number of Aboriginal staff is not matched in any other WACHS region.

3.  Improvement in the Workplace Environment Award – Sponsored by GESB

Joint Winners:
Tim Turner, Indigenous Employment Program, WA Country Health Service – Pilbara; and RoStar eLearning, Health Corporate Network.
Improvement in the Workplace Environment Award

The Indigenous Employment Program is an innovative five-year project to increase the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal staff across the Pilbara. The program is a partnership with Royalties for Regions and the mining community. This commitment has witnessed more than 30 new starters in the past 12 months. This is a significant achievement as the Pilbara is one of the most competitive labour markets in Australia.

Tim has expanded his horizon and will be moving to the non-government sector with a commitment to impart and focus on the benefits of Taekwondo as part of a broader youth development strategy for Aboriginal people and community.  He will be the Director for the YMCA Pilbara region, and he is looking forward to the future development of the Pilbara region.
