Tournament report:

Players completed their weigh-in and were ready. Their weights were recorded and the system calculated all correct handicap points in accordance with the criteria for the league competition in each allotted belt and weight age group division.

The day started on time, and the fights commenced with the junior age group divisions, and finishing ahead of schedule. After the lunch break, Tore Bule Turner demonstrated his Michael Jackson impersonation dance moves to the delight of the crowd, including the slides and the moon walk.

The poomsae competition went underway and each player did their best. The seniors came on after that and at the end of the day, there were quite a few sore bodies.

The concept of the league system was designed to enable players to have as many competition bouts as possible in a round robin format. The top 2 players will fight off in the final to decide the gold and silver medal winners while the next placed 3rd and 4th player ranked on the league ladder play off for the bronze medal.

This year’s second league comp was contested by 8 clubs and the medal tally shows:

1st: Mandurah 8 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze

2nd: Halls Head: 6, 3, 2

3rd: Narrogin: 5, 6, 2

4th: Hedland: 3, 6, 1

ATA Hedland starts with promise

posted by Kim Seng in Port Hedland

Master Kim Seng demonstrates the high knee action required to execute excellent kicksThe newly-established Hedland Taekwondo Club recently received a special visit from world-renowned Taekwondo master Kim Seng. In addition to his own personal achievements, including a ranking of seventh Dan Black Belt, Mr Seng has been a referee at major international tournaments.

On August 22, Mr Seng travelled to Hedland to undertake a weekend seminar with senior club members at the JD Hardie Centre, teaching new techniques and ensuring club members were practising Taekwondo at an international standard. Mr Seng’s style was fun and fast-paced as students raised a sweat but were challenged to strive for excellence.

Despite being less than two months old, the club already has a membership of more than 25 students and has appointed fifth Dan Black Belt master John Geeves as head instructor.

On the final day of the seminar, students were graded by both Mr Seng and Mr Geeves. Students Tim Turner and Sean Van Hengel, aged 12, were both skilled enough to attain the rank of red belt. Mr Seng was impressed by the general standard of taekwondo and also double graded several students on the final day.

The club has planned a trip to Perth to attend competitions at the end of the year and is also investigating the possibility of visiting Indonesia as part of an international exchange program supported by Mr Seng.

The Hedland Taekwondo Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at the JD Hardie Centre between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. For more information, contact Brent Kara on 0429 795 692 or Tim Turner on 0427 995 291

Merrily Christmas and Happily New Year poem

Christmas is as much about opening our hearts
As it is searching ourselves, our feelings, our thoughts

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to be put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is as good as you do for yourself

..  as for always ..  as for the memories ..

Remember the good old times we spent together
charyeot, kyeong-nye, joon-bi, si-jak, kal-yeo, key-sok, geu-man
moving like lightning, some of us with twinkle toes and gliding across the mat
A wriggle here and a wriggle there, 1-step, 2-step, three
In yellow or in blue, it is still with the same lively glow

Oh, those long waits, sitting and waiting for the sudden action-reaction
waiting, waiting, waiting, it seems like eternity and time is ticking on
first it was Chung, then it was Hong with those explosive kicks
landing on the face and on the body or just hitting clean air
Ka-pow, ka-bam, ka-boom or just do it like the Nike swoosh
Yes it is a point .. No it isn’t  a point .. thinking, thinking

Decisions, decisions, decisions we have to make
As one we all collectively confirm spontaneously within that finite split second
The crowd cheers, they scream, they boo, the players they jump for joy
Such excitement, such emotions, and a joy to watch and experience
Yes, such is the art, the skill, the timing, the satisfaction
and most of all the feelings, the thrill, and the adrenalin charge
Alas ..  Alas.   Our art, our skills, this aspect of our duties are to be put away
Replaced by electronic senses that has no heart, no feelings, no emotions, no adrenalin charge

Remember the good old days, comrade, maestro and friend
In the best spirit of our sport, our art, our skills
Treasure them skills for they would be fond memories in time to come
Perhaps we may find solace in those games they play on the Wii

Anyhow ..

Have a MERRILY CHRISTMAS
And a HAPPILY NEW YEAR

Kim Seng

Australia
