The Technical Poomsae Judging Course held on Sunday July 20, 2008 at the Kwinana Recquatic Centre was presented by Mr Shin Boo Kim (8th Dan from the South West Taekwondo Academy). He is the current head of the WA State Technical Committee and the Australian National assistant Coach for the Australian Poomsae National Team in 2006 and 2007.  It was an honour to be instructed by him and to be refreshed on the judging criteria for poomsae competitions.

Acknowledging sources of wealth

posted by Roy Khoh in Coaching

It is important, in this growing global community where information is so readily available, to give credit where it is due. I learnt it back in school days, they call it "referencing". I just didn’t quite carry it across to other aspects of my life until recently.

It only takes one person to make one remarkable comment before it sticks in your mind for the rest of your life.

For me, it was at a birthday dinner for Richard Huynh a couple of years back; could’ve been last year. It was straight after a tournament and I was commenting about some of ATA Morley’s students and their technique. I kept referring to the style as "Richard’s". It is quite distinct. If you go to a tournament – keep an eye out for them in the Poomsae divisions, they’re great to watch. Then Raffaele DiRenzo (the Head Instructor of the Morley branch) rightly corrected me by saying it was "his" style. I didn’t quite understand it immediately, and I eventually did; especially after he said "you’ve got to give credit where it is due". Since then, this statement has been stuck in my mind when occurrences require acknowledgement. It took one person to make one remarkable comment and now it’s stuck in mind. I am grateful for that episode at the dinner. More

What’s a common kick for knockouts in WTF sparring?

Well, from this video that I found on youtube, it appears that spinning kick is quite effective. Especially when executed properly at the head. Obviously, a certain skill-set is required to be able to consistently perform an efficient spinning kick.

Have any of you experienced giving knock-out blows? With what attack and tell us of the situation and difficulty or easiness of it. Or maybe you’ve been on the receiving end of one.

WTF Competition Rules

The World Taekwondo Federation produced a short video clip in 2006 that briefly explains the competition rules for its premier event, sparring. It is currently still up on their website, and just in case they decide to take it down – we provide it here also. We have a special liking to it. Not just because we get to quickly (in 8 minutes) learn about some key competition allowances and disapprovals – we have appearances by an ATA WA member inside the clip! See if you can spot who it is, and when they appear in the video!

Everybody wants his cake and eat it too

posted by Kim Seng in Coaching, Referee

Sporting success or more precisely the desire to win all the time has engulfed many taekwondo practitioners including coaches, athletes, supporters and parents.  Sport is a contest of two or more participants (athletes) and there can only be one winner.  There is passion, but if misplaced can turn ugly.  There is sportsmanship and this must be embraced if sport is to remain attractive to all.  The success and growth of any sport, and taekwondo is no different, relies on rules and ethics and exemplary behaviours by all.

The higher the stakes the more emotional the ride.  The expectations for some are too high and at times unrealistic and unachievable.  When results do not meet expectations, some participants resort to uncontrolled bad behaviour to the extremes.  It is unbecoming of any taekwondo practitioner as one of the accepted behaviours expected of a martial artist is controlled behaviour not uncontrolled behaviour.  Sport loves a winner, and it equally hates a bad loser.
