Photos from the 2008 Taekwondo Australia Nationals and Open Championships, held in Homebush (Olympic Park) Sydney, are now up. There are various photos of players, coaches and family supporters from Western Australia. Click on the photo to begin viewing the photo gallery.

Obviously, we focused mainly on our ATA members and in the spirit of the sport we gathered as many West Australians as we could for some group photos. The group photos are actually of ALL the Western Australians who remained until the end of the competition days. Unfortunately, there were only 3 of us remaining on the colour-belt sparring day – so no group photo from the Friday’s competition.

We appreciate the efforts that players, friends and family supporters displayed by staying to barrack and cheer on our state players – even competitors from other clubs around Western Australia.

Report

The Magnificent 7+1 team members from the ATA Peel region. (from left to right): front: Alice Warren, Miranda Seng, Zachary Platt; back row: Jedi Calicdan, Kim Seng (coach), Aneldi Schoeman, Elanie Schoeman, Roy Khoh.Elanie Schoeman (Rockingham) produced the best performance from the ATA team members when she won 2 gold medals while representing WA at the Australian Taekwondo nationals being held in Sydney during 4th – 6th September 2008.

Elanie won her poomsae division with a high score of 7.47 beating her 2nd placed opponent from Queensland who scored 7.12 (a 0.1 point gap can be similar as a 1-point difference for sparring). In the sparring contests she beat Victoria and NSW by runaway 7 point gap scores of 9-2. She executed her roundhouse kicks to precision placing them squarely on her opponent’s trunk scoring areas. She has potential to reach greater heights in her development towards her red belt next year and then black belt in the following year.

Next best performed were Aneldi Schoeman (Rockingham) and Miranda Seng (Mandurah) who both won a gold and a bronze medal each.

Aneldi was trailing 1-0 in the 1st round and scored a head shot with 2 points to lead 2-1 but her NSW opponent scored the next 2 points to counter back into a lead of 3-2 until the last few seconds when Aneldi scored the important 1 point to tie the score 3-3 to force a sudden death round which she won. Aneldi scored 7.13 in her poomsae to win bronze in a field of 6 players.

Miranda Seng (Mandurah) won her poomsae division with a score of 7.35 beating her next placed opponent from Victoria who scored 6.78. Miranda lost her sparring to Victoria in the semi-finals and bowed out with a bronze medal.

Zachary Platt (Halls Head) won his semi-final fight against Queensland in a close match 2-1. In the final, also against Queensland, Zach unleashed 5 unanswered point scores before the end of the first round before slowing down in a sporting move to allow the contest to play out time and the other player to play the game. His opponent came back to score another 2 points before Zach let fly with 2 more roundhouse kicks to win convincingly 7 points to 2.

The other gold medal winners were won by our male black belt poomsae players; Richard Hunyh with a score of 8.20 (2nd placed was 7.83); Roy Khoh with a score of 8.10 (2nd placed was 7.35, a massive gap of 0.75); and Jedi Calicdan with a winning score of 7.68 (2nd placed was 7.18).

Alice Warren (Mandurah) went kick for kick in her sparring match with South Australia. She caught up after being 1 point down in the 1st round to tie the score 1-1 to force another sudden death round but was unlucky to lose by a golden point to the SA player in the end. Many of both players’ kicks went begging for points and nonetheless it was an exciting match as both little tyros just went for it. The little pocket dynamos embraced after the fight displaying good sporting spirits.

The hard luck stories belonged to brother and sister, Liam and Stephanie Fossey from Morley. They were both placed 4th amongst 8 and 9 players in their divisions. Liam scored 7.58 to lose bronze by a mere 0.02 points gap while Stephanie scored 7.18 to lose bronze by 0.07 points gap.

South West Bunbury Invitational Tournament a Challenge

2008 South West Taekwondo Invitational Gallery

The Club level invitational organised by the South West Taekwondo Academy ended up being a bit of a challenge for the ATA members who competed there. You can view the results here. The competition was held over two days at the Bunbury PCYC on Saturday August 2 and Sunday August 3.

Being a good tournament to get our Nationals players ready and prepped, it turned out to be a bit on the small side. As it sometimes is with club invitationals, there may not be enough players to fill up certain categories. As it turned out, there were some entries that had no divisions, so they did not journey down south to Bunbury for the tournament. Being 4 weeks away from the Nationals in Sydney – this was a well timed tournament so that players can gain more insight to improve and have enough time for recovery from injury.

Taekwondo at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Join the forum discussion on this post

Taekwondo is being contested over 4 days at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Beginning Wednesday August 20 through to Saturday August 23.

Each day, there will be 2 finals being played out. I hope that television coverage will be good this time. Typically, the finals are televised simply because they determine the most important outcome – however, in the sport of Taekwondo it may be more interesting to watch the preliminary matches leading up to the finals.

Perth, Western Australia, is lucky enough to be in the same timezone as Beijing. So we needn’t stay up too late and lose valuable sleep time.

Date   Divisions Contested
Wednesday August 20 Mens -58kg & Female -49kg
Thursday August 21 Mens -68kg & Female -57kg
Friday August 22 Mens -80kg & Female -67kg
Saturday August 23 Mens +80k & Female +67kg

I encourage you to actively engage in the forum and see what additional "Taekwondo" information you can contribute. Player profiles, times, venues etc.
