It appeared the SQL server was down for some time about 24 hours ago. It took some time to restore.

Afterwards, the SQL server was restored and this site was still inaccessible.

It took some time – several restorations and in the end, all should be back to normal (well, from data about 2 days ago) – and it only took 3 hours!!!

Record of process involved in restoring WordPress backup.

I take regular backups of SQL database using CPanel Backups – saved in .sql.gz compressed file format.

Restoring the backed up files from CPanel "Backups" didn't appear to work. Had no effect and made no changes.

Ended up deleting the SQL database from CPanel "MySQL Databases".

Restored the backed up file from CPanel "Backups". Returning to "MySQL Databases" to add in the user and give appropriate permissions. Returning to website homepage showed beginning steps of installing a fresh install of WordPress … NOT GOOD!!!

Final solution was restoring the backed up .sql.gz file from "phpMyAdmin" inside CPanel. Selected the appropriate database and imported text file from there. Chose "none" for SQL compatibility mode. Errors popped up about having null entry for compantibility mode although things seem fine.

Still to test effects from the turn of events.

Note: Internet Explorer 9 won't let me post in these forums :(

Add to this list a re-image of the server hard-disk-drive.

It appears that when they got things back up – all data files (except for the sql database) reverted back to about a week ago. I know this because of an error in the file permissions for a certain directory. Had it fixed last week Sunday, and it was back again yesterday.

That also had a cascading effect on other parts of the site – certain things were broken all over the place again.

Many plugins required a re-install. I also took the opportunity to upgrade some of them also. In particular – Jetpack and Featurific.
