Referee career development pathway – International level

posted by Kim Seng at 10:49 pm in Referee

Last issue I presented the development pathway to progress from a starting referee to senior national referee level in Australia.  In this issue, I will discuss the development pathway for the international referee.

After a minimum 3 years of refereeing as a senior national referee, the next logical step would be to progress into the international scene.  The referee is ready.  The referee has to be recommended by the National Referee Board and the President as these are the entry requirements to attend an International Referee (IR) course which must be conducted by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).   Other criteria requirements are 4th dan kukkiwon ranking for male referees and 2nd dan ranking for female referees.  Some countries, in particular the developing countries can recommend referees lower than 4th dan ranking to attend the referee courses eg the developing Oceania countries.
