Taekwondo included in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore

Youth Olympic Games - SingaporeThe Youth Olympic Games (YOG) for taekwondo will be held in Singapore from 14-26 August 2010.   SEE THE YOG TAEKWONDO RESULTS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW:  

The WTF announced that each country will be able to enter a maximum of 3 male and 3 female players.  The YOG player qualifications will be held in conjunction with the 2010 World Taekwondo Junior Championships being held in Tijuana, Mexico during February or March 2010.

The top 6 players in each weight division for male and female will qualify through the YOG qualification tournament, while the host country will have 3 male and 3 female players.  The top 4 players from the YOG qualification will qualify and those players placed between 5th to 8th will play off for the next 2 places.

Each division will be 10 players with the remainder players to be allotted from the NOC universality places for countries based on the following criteria:

  1. must be a member national association of the WTF
  2. have participated in at least one of the last two World Junior Championships
  3. did not qualify a player from the YOG qualification tournament
  4. have participated in continental junior championships
  5. and countries that were prevented or unable to participate in the YOG qualification tournament.

Players must hold kukkiwon junior black belt qualifications and born between 1 January 1993 and 31 December 1994- ie will be 16 and 17 years old by the end of December 2010.  The weight divisions are:

Male:

  • Under 48 kgs
  • 48 to 55 kgs
  • 55 to 63 kgs
  • 63 to 73 kgs
  • over 73 kgs

 Female:

  • under 44 kgs
  • 44 to 49 kgs
  • 49 to 55 kgs
  • 55 to 63 kgs
  • over 63 kgs

    The World qualification tournament for the Youth OIympic Games for taekwondo will be held in Tijuana, Mexico from 27th to 28th February 2010. This follows the World Junior Taekwondo Championships, being held at the same place in Tijuana, Mexico from 22nd to 25th February 2010.

    The World qualification tournament for the YOG for taekwondo has been re-scheduled to 3-4 March 2010 and still being held in Tijuana, Mexico. The World junior championship follows on from 6-9 March 2010

    Wow, I'm surprised how big the Youth Olympics are. Just like the Summer Olympics – they've got their own Official Theme Song. I've embedded the video at the top of the article.

    If you watch Idol, you may recognise up to 3 of the 5 singers as Idol contestants.

    I found two references to Taekwondo in the music video clip. 1:45 and 3:03
