ATA referees perform at the Australian Nationals in Sydney – 4-6 Sept 2008

Three referees from the Australian Taekwondo Academy represented Western Australia in the Australian Taekwondo Nationals and Open Championship this past week. Richard Huynh, Jed Calicdan and Roy Khoh. One other WA referee could not make the trip at the last moment while 2 from the SouthWest group officiated as poomsae judges..

The three of us from ATA went to referee on both the sparring competition days; on Friday and Saturday. We arrived there late Wednesday night so that we could also compete in the poomsae, technical day on Thursday.

Touching down in Sydney approximately 20:30 on Wednesday, we caught a cab to Pullman Hotel inside the Olympic Park precinct. The Pullman is a 5-star hotel that had just recently opened operations 2 days before we arrived. One of the waitresses, during breakfast, had mentioned that to me and also stated that there was some special discount because of the opening week. Either way, I was quite surpised and very pleased with the hotel accommodation that the referees received this tournament.

South West Bunbury Invitational Tournament a Challenge

The Club level invitational organised by the South West Taekwondo Academy ended up being a bit of a challenge for the ATA members who competed there. You can view the results here. The competition was held over two days at the Bunbury PCYC on Saturday August 2 and Sunday August 3.

Being a good tournament to get our Nationals players ready and prepped, it turned out to be a bit on the small side. As it sometimes is with club invitationals, there may not be enough players to fill up certain categories. As it turned out, there were some entries that had no divisions, so they did not journey down south to Bunbury for the tournament. Being 4 weeks away from the Nationals in Sydney – this was a well timed tournament so that players can gain more insight to improve and have enough time for recovery from injury.

Acknowledging sources of wealth

It is important, in this growing global community where information is so readily available, to give credit where it is due. I learnt it back in school days, they call it "referencing". I just didn’t quite carry it across to other aspects of my life until recently.

It only takes one person to make one remarkable comment before it sticks in your mind for the rest of your life.

For me, it was at a birthday dinner for Richard Huynh a couple of years back; could’ve been last year. It was straight after a tournament and I was commenting about some of ATA Morley’s students and their technique. I kept referring to the style as "Richard’s". It is quite distinct. If you go to a tournament – keep an eye out for them in the Poomsae divisions, they’re great to watch. Then Raffaele DiRenzo (the Head Instructor of the Morley branch) rightly corrected me by saying it was "his" style. I didn’t quite understand it immediately, and I eventually did; especially after he said "you’ve got to give credit where it is due". Since then, this statement has been stuck in my mind when occurrences require acknowledgement. It took one person to make one remarkable comment and now it’s stuck in mind.
