WA Technical Poomsae Seminar
The Technical Poomsae Judging Course held on Sunday July 20, 2008 at the Kwinana Recquatic Centre was presented by Mr Shin Boo Kim (8th Dan from the South West Taekwondo Academy). He is the current head of the WA State Technical Committee and the Australian National assistant Coach for the Australian Poomsae National Team in 2006 and 2007. It was an honour to be instructed by him and to be refreshed on the judging criteria for poomsae competitions.
The class was small enough for everyone to receive great attention to detail when performing specific techniques, emphasising on the key points and common errors. An all-black-belt room, everyone went step-by-step through all the taegeuk poomsaes and then onto Koryo, Geumgang and Taebaek. Along the way we were encouraged to ask questions to clarify on any particular step. It is absolutely essential, especially when judging, to know precisely how techniques are meant to be performed.
An extra student turned up after the lunch break (without uniform) and we continued with the higher poomsaes (patterns) from Pyonwon, Sipjin, Jitae and up to Chonkwon only, while certain others refined Koryo and Geumgang. Then onto the testing phase of the course. The fun, yet most educational portion of the day.
Every uniformed Taekwondo student there had their turn to be judged. Each person were in turn scrutinised and positively critiqued to provide useful feedback. It was satisfying to see, that some individuals improved from the start of the poomsae through to the end. Step by step, some of us were provided with which particular techniques we had problems with – and the next subsequent equivalent action was performed more correctly.
We ended the day with a fun photo session while the test was being carried out for those attempting to attain their next poomsae judging qualification level. We weren’t quite prepared, however we managed to get a few photos to document the day. Click on the photo above to view the gallery.
