What’s a common kick for knockouts in WTF sparring?

posted by Roy Khoh at 12:06 pm in Coaching, Sparring Competitions, Videos

Well, from this video that I found on youtube, it appears that spinning kick is quite effective. Especially when executed properly at the head. Obviously, a certain skill-set is required to be able to consistently perform an efficient spinning kick.

Have any of you experienced giving knock-out blows? With what attack and tell us of the situation and difficulty or easiness of it. Or maybe you’ve been on the receiving end of one.

I haven’t delivered any myself, yet.

Closest I came was actually the last sparring tournament I entered. Only WA state championships back in 2006.

I could still feel my bunged up left leg, and still entered anyway. I had 2 years off from sparring because of it, and I was missing it.

First fight, I got through winning 3-2. I tried to keep my left leg protected and focused on using my right leg only. That didn’t quite work out. Luckily, my opponent (Michael Kaplan) had an injury on his left foot, so he hardly used that either:)

Being states, and only having 6 people in my division, I got through to the final already. I was one of the lucky ones in the draw who had less fights. So I versed Clinton Norris, again. (One of the header pictures is from this fight).

Last fight of the day, so everyone was watching. All the crowd, all the officials. First time I experienced that! Clinton knew I had a bad left leg (whereas Michael did not).

Anyway, I lost the fight something like 8-6 or so. In between, I was quite proud of one head-kick (a round-house at the end of a flurry of kicks from the both of us). I was quite amazed he was still standing and continuing to fight.

Months later at the Nationals in Adelaide, I caught up with Clinton and he told me that him and his TKD mates went to Nandos after the tournament. His mates commented that he wasn’t looking well and Clinton mentioned he felt nauseas, a bit dizzy and all. I’m not sure why, but I remember something along the lines of him telling me he didn’t feel well and had trouble standing up in the shower after the tournament.

Well, it seems to me that I couldn’t knock him out, although I may have left him with a minor concussion. A consolation prize I suppose.

Roy, That was a great kick you delivered at the 2006 States in the final match. It was a beautiful roundhouse kick to his head and would have knocked out a normal player, but then he had a hard head. He didn’t know where it came from and neither did his coach because he was questioning where the 2 points came from?

From the sounds of it, it would appear Clinton was concussed from your great kick.
